Al Maqta Bridge was built in 1968 and was the first to connect the Abu Dhabi island to the mainland. It was built over a causeway that was, until then, the only way to get off the island. People had to wait until low tide to cross.

- It was difficult and some accidents would happen while vehicles were crossing the channel to reach Abu Dhabi.
- Then in 1967, Consalt firms were chosen to design Al Maqta bridge and in 1968 the work was done, which also introduced new road approaches and dredging to use the channel at all stages of tides.
